Level 2 charger and panel upgrade cost
Why the wall box is the cheap part, when you actually need a panel upgrade, and what to ask the electrician on the first visit.
A Level 2 charger is the overnight home charger, the 240-volt kind, not the slow household outlet. The wall box is rarely the expensive line. The electrician’s path from the breaker box to where you park is: feet of conduit, finished ceilings, a detached garage, and whether the incoming service can take another large load.
What does a typical install cost?

On the same page, adding a circuit when you have empty slots and spare capacity is the cheap path (on the order of $60 to $150 in their breakdown for that slice). A smaller extra breaker box in the garage (a subpanel) is listed around $500 to $1,500. Upgrading the main service or the whole panel is $1,500 to $4,000+.
Treat those as bands, not a bid. Long pipe through a finished ceiling, a detached garage, and the utility touching the meter move you to the top.
Best case. 200-amp panel on the garage wall, open slots, 20 feet of conduit. EnergySage/Qmerit’s overall $800 to $3,000 band is where this lives, often the lower half. Hardware is a few hundred; labor is the rest.
Normal case. Panel in the basement, charger in the garage, finished ceiling, 40 to 80 feet. You’re in the middle of that band or above it.

Do I need a panel upgrade?
Not automatically. A Level 2 circuit often wants a 40 to 60 amp breaker. Homes on 200-amp service (a typical modern feed) with open slots frequently take it, while many pre-2000s 100-amp panels don’t once the heat pump or AC and a water heater are already on the box.
The grown-up answer is a load calculation by a licensed electrician: they add up what the house already uses. “Your panel looks full” isn’t that calculation, because empty slots can still mean the incoming service is maxed out.
Before you pay for a 200-amp service, price these forks:
- A lower-amp charger setting (slower overnight fill, smaller breaker)
- A gadget that shares an existing 240-volt circuit so the dryer and charger don’t run full tilt together
- A subpanel in the garage if the main is physically stuffed with breakers but electrically fine
Those are still electrical work, and they are often cheaper than a service upgrade. Load management (a few hundred to about $600 in various 2026 installer writeups) is the fork that avoids the service upgrade, and it’s still an electrician.
Hardwire or the big plug?
A NEMA 14-50 is the big 240-volt receptacle, same family as some electric dryers and ranges. Plug-in is convenient if you already have the outlet, though new 14-50s often need a GFCI breaker under current code, which isn’t free. Hardwiring the wall unit is frequently cleaner for a dedicated charger. Neither is automatically right; it depends on the run length and what your inspector actually wants.
Is there still a federal charger credit?
Don’t assume a federal EV-charger credit is still on the table for a job you haven’t started. Confirm placed-in-service dates on IRS 30C (or whatever replaced it in your year) before you subtract $1,000 from a bid. Utility rebates are local.
What should the quote include?
- Load calculation, not a glance at empty slots.
- Charger amperage, breaker size, wire size, and whether it is hardwired.
- Path: feet of conduit, finished walls, trench, indoor vs outdoor disconnect.
- Panel: included, excluded, or “if needed” with a not-to-exceed.
- Permit and inspection.
- Who owns utility coordination if the meter or service drop changes.
What should I ask on the first visit?
- What is the service amperage, and did you look at the meter socket or just the sticker inside the panel?
- Will you do a load calc, and can I have the sheet?
- Hardwire or 14-50, and which breaker (GFCI or not) does this town want?
- Path of the conduit, in English, including the part through the finished room.
- If the calc fails, what is Plan B priced at today, not after demolition?
The fork on this visit is extra circuit, extra garage panel, or a new service. Get that written down before anyone opens a wall.
What box am I actually buying?
